The play starts as each wife introduces themselves through a song. Only the wife who endured the most can win the title of the band's lead singer. Despite arguing among themselves, the wives finally realize they can no longer let this king define them. Finally, by the conclusion they sing together as a allied group.
The play initially opened in 2017, but Mortensen Hall at Bushnell Theatre now unveils the touring showing. Critics rave about the show's innovation and dynamic advocacy. Fans love the stunning music, the message, and the joy that the musical instills in them.
Six story
"Six" is the retelling of the lives of the wives of King Henry the 8th, who was an infamous king of England in the early 1500s. During his four decades in power, he married six times. His demands to leave his first marriage saw the separation of the Church of England from papal authority. Many people probably are familiar with the story of Henry VIII. However, you be as familiar with the story of his many wives. That’s where "Six" begins.
The musical delves into the story of the six queens as they sing about their individual experiences with Henry VIII. The queens compete for who had the worst experience in living with the king. The queens discuss divorce, rejections, adultery, and even beheadings in a way that keeps you laughing while also touching your emotions. They even place a contemporary twist on the story by incorporating a dating app through a parody.
Eventually, they realize that fighting over who had the worst experience with Henry VIII is pointless. They come to realize that Henry VIII robbed them of their individuality. They are not just the six wives of Henry VIII - they have their individual strengths that deserve celebrating. The ex-wives eventually work together to write new endings to their lives. They achieve their “happily ever afters” that Henry VIII denied them by dreaming of what their lives would’ve been like without meeting Henry VIII.
