Happening specifically during the time span concurrent with the widespread rebellion in 1832 in Paris, the musical is the story of Jean Valjean, a local of Paris who was sentenced for almost two decades due to stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his release on parole, he escapes and looks for a second chance to live his life; Valjean then takes on a different persona as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer loyal to the letter of the law and set on apprehending and bringing Valjean to justice.

Happening over a duration of almost 20 years covered by the musical's entire production, Valjean is intertwined through fated encounters with several key characters throughout the show – Fantine is one of his factory workers who gives birth to an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the adoptive baby of Madeleine, who by no surprise Fantine’s infant; Marius, a student fighting for the rebellion and the love interest of Cosette. Other individuals seen in the musical consist of the Thénardiers, abusive proprietors who think only of themselves and are consumed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their daughter, who is desperately infatuated with for Marius; and supporters of the government opposition specifically Gavroche, a naive but cunning child, and the rebellion’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.

This diverse group of characters who meet by fate and their individual tales are presented beautifully on stage, not just with the show's 19th century French-inspired outfit and set design, but most especially with the musical being sung-through fully from start to finish. With hit songs like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its amazing score, the musical is able to portray the underlying motives hidden deep in each and every character that unveils the magic of Les Mis on stage.
