Some Like It Hot
“Some Like It Hot” is glitzy, excessive, frenetic and funny, with hyperactive choreography, a game, talented cast, and a jazzy score with multiple 11 o’clock numbers.” – New York Theater

It’s 1933 and things are getting a little bit hectic in Chicago! The prohibition has got everyone to look for excitement somewhere else and it’s making everyone a little more creative. Sweet Sue was arrested in a raid but thankfully she was bailed out. In a chance to renew herself, she starts a band. It’s not your ordinary group, it’s an all-female band that will tour across the country. Joe and Jerry are musicians in a club who happened to witness a gangster related murder. In order to hide from the mob, the duo decided to join Sue’s band. But in order to join, they had to disguise themselves as women. Hence, Joe and Jerry took on the identities of music students, Josephine and Daphne. As the band goes on tour, both “Josephine” and “Daphne,” the duo becomes attracted to the band’s singer Sugar and fights over her attention. What ensues is a fiasco that’s both hilarious but also ridiculous. Will the mob or the FBI ever find Joe and Jerry? Find out in this hilarious epic!
The musical opened in 2022 at the Shubert Theatre. The story is an adaptation of the popular 50s film. The score features music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Meanwhile, the book is written by Matthew Lopez and Amber Ruffin. This terrific combination of creative minds brought a mind blowing and epically funny musical that people had travelled to Broadway for. This year, Some Like It Hot the Musical hits the road and will be conquering several key cities, including Hartford, Connecticut!
Enjoy this amazing story. It’s like going back in time when Chicago was overrun by jazz musicians and the mob was a dime a dozen. The creative team is led by the legendary Casey Nicholaw, the same Tony Award-winning director and choreographer responsible for the Book of Mormon and the Drowsy Chaperone. This excellent production would not be complete without the amazing work of Tony Award winning scenic designer Scott Pask, three-time Tony Award winning costume designer Gregg Barnes, the legendary eight-time Tony winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, and Tony Award winning sound designer Brian Ronan.
“A super-sized, all-out song-and-dance spectacular!” – New York Times

Meanwhile, Some Like It Hot’s staggering touring cast is sure to blow the audience away. The North American tour ensemble brings the stunning talents of Matt Loehr as Joe and Josephine, Tavis Kordell as Jerry and Daphne, Leandra Ellis-Gaston as Sugar, Tanne Conner Jones as Sweet Sue, and tons more.
The musical’s got some big shoes to fill especially when the original roles of the iconic characters were played by Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curties. But Variety Magazine had nothing but great words. “Taking a classic film comedy — especially one that plays fast and loose with gender and sexuality — and turning it into a big Broadway musical is far from a sure thing in these contemporary times. But the creative team of the latest stage musical version of the 1959 movie ‘Some Like It Hot’ brings fresh perspectives and a different kind of fun to the iconic film.” The review continued to add, “This stage production boasts swell performances, dandy twists and turns, razzmatazz dancing and a whole lotta energy.”
Meanwhile, the New York Times finds the musical a pleasant adaptation of the iconic film. “A Broadway musical version of the Billy Wilder film finds exhilarating new ways to make the gender comedy sing.” The review also added that the musical is “a super-sized, all-out song-and-dance spectacular!
Meanwhile, NewCityStage reviewed Some Like It Hot’s Touring production in Chicago. The writer called this epic a “classic with a spin.” The writer goes on to compliment the touring ensemble, “The ultimate strength of this show is the talented cast. Leads Kordell, Juvier, Matt Loehr, Leandra Ellis-Gaston and Devon Goffman are old-style Broadway belters and superb tap dancers. The whole cast handled the big tap production numbers that harken back to movie musicals.”
Avid musical lover Jonathan Mandell from New York Theater wrote, “Some Like It Hot” is glitzy, excessive, frenetic and funny, with hyperactive choreography, a game, talented cast, and a jazzy score with multiple 11 o’clock numbers.”
