Synopsis
The show is set in the early 1930s just ahead of the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness a mobster commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they’re working. Rather than have the mobster to put out a hit on them, the musicians go on the run.
They put on costumes and, though they're cross-dressing, are able to join a touring all-girl swing big band called Sweet Sue and the Society Syncopators. While touring, the two fall in love with the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They keep their true identities protected, but they both hope to gain the favor of Sugar Kane.
As the group tours, romances form that threaten to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The mob and the FBI become involved, spotting Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines. Which further complicating the groups touring to performances and its ability to find new investors.
Jerry, now identifying as Daphne, falls in love with one of the investors, leading to a planned wedding. Eventually, true identities becomes known, but none of the characters let that alter their feelings for each other. As Prohibition ends, everyone is able to move on with their new lives.
Origins
This captivating musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It received 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. Among its four Tony Awards, it won Best Costumes and Best Choreography, meaning you’ll appreciate the visual portions of the show as much as the amazing music and lyrics. It features detailed tap-dancing numbers, too.
This musical follows the captivating story told in the 1959 movie by the same name. The film starred the famous Marilyn Monroe, making it highly popular at the time and for generations that followed. The new musical retells this time-honored story from the film with a twist while maintaining the vintage comedy and musical styles from the movie.
